Located on the Second floor of the Vernon Town Hall, The New England Civil War Museum is a collection of Civil War and Grand Army artifacts dating back to 1861. Comprised of the most extensive identified Civil War artifacts in Connecticut, it is the longest continued GAR hall in use in the entire United States of America, starting from September 1890 to today. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War continue to meet under the same roof.

One of the highlights is The Burpee Collection. A Rockville, CT resident, Thomas F. Burpee, Colonel, 21st CT Infantry, used this collection of personal items during the war. Another rare treat is the Hirst Collection. 3 Brothers, John, Joseph, & Ben donated all of their personal items used in the Civil War. The Brothers were members of the "Fighting 14th" which has the distinction of fighting in every battle from Antietam through Appomattox. The Fighting 14th CT remains the most honored regiment in Connecticut. Another "must see" is the a rare original full set of The War of the Rebellion Official Records published in the 1880's by the U.S. Government. Only 2 original full sets of this work are known to exist. The other is in Washington D.C. at the Library of Congress.

Please keep in mind that the Thomas O'Connell Historical Library is now opening. The Library contains many original works, and a collection of Rare Civil War information and photographs.
